Below are some of our recommendations to promote good oral hygiene for the entire family.
Infant to 6 years old
- Begin cleaning your baby’s mouth during the first few days after birth by wiping the gums with a clean, moist gauze pad or washcloth. As soon as teeth appear, decay can occur. A baby’s front four teeth usually push through the gums at about 6 months of age, although some children don’t have their first tooth until 12 to 14 months.
- Make an appointment for your “”childs first dental visit”” when your child gets their first tooth or before their first birthday (whichever comes first)
- For children younger than 3 years of age, caregivers should begin brushing kids teeth as soon as they begin to come into the mouth by using toothpaste in an amount no more than the size of a grain of rice. Brush teeth thoroughly in the morning and before bedtime.
- For children 3 to 6 years of age, increase to a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise children’s brushing and remind them not to swallow the toothpaste.
- When your child has two teeth that touch, you should begin flossing between their teeth daily.
- Limiting sugary drinks and snacks will also go a long way in preventing cavities. This is especially important for children who are still drinking from bottles. For example, when young children fall asleep with a bottle of juice in their mouth, that sugar and coloring can stain and cause decay. This can lead to discolored teeth and cavities even before the age of 2 or 3.
Age 7 to Adulthood
- Brush thoroughly in the morning and again before bedtime for at least two minutes. Be sure to brush all surfaces of the teeth, gums and tongue. Use a timer or clock to ensure you or your child is brushing for at least two solid minutes.
- Floss between teeth at least once per day (ideally in the evening).
- Limit sugary drinks and snacks to help prevent cavities.
- Always use a custom athletic mouth guard to protect teeth during any sport or activity that the face or head may sustain impact. This includes sports such as football, baseball, lacrosse, skateboarding etc.
